Words by Anita Stenberg, translated from Norwegian to English
The Olympics have been postponed until 2021.
In the current situation, I think this is the right decision.
I am glad that the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has finally made a decision. The worst in this period has been the uncertainty, rumors, and speculation. There are still many questions that are unanswered. An exact date for the Olympics? What does the remaining track season look like? There are many questions that remain unanswered, but the most important thing is that I know that the Olympics will be summer 2021.
I am glad the IOC has been thinking of safety first, as well as making my dream, like many other athletes, coaches, nations and supporters, about the Olympics still realistic.
I have no deadline and I'm in no hurry.
I love the job I do on a bike and all the joy the sport gives me. August 2020 or Summer 2021 doesn't make a big difference. My motivation to work harder than ever is still on top.
What matters most to me is being able to represent Norway at the Olympics, no matter when they choose to hold it. I'll make sure to be in the best shape of my life.
In many ways I am relieved that the Olympics are postponed.
The last 2 years of qualification have been tough. Now, I finally have time for a long training block without competitions.. A period where I can focus only on training, and refresh my mind. I have the opportunity to plan the training towards the Olympic even better. I get the opportunity to be even better prepared and I can spend even more time optimizing my equipment. I simply have even more time to nerd, more time to become a stronger and faster version of myself.
I feel incredibly good about how the future looks like.
The only thing that can worry me is the economy.
How will COVID-19 affect the Norwegian economy? Top athletes’ finances? My sponsors' finances? My coach's finances?
I am used to living off bread and water, and to live in my little cave. But I am 100% dependent on all the support I get from sponsors, NCF, OLT and Kenneth Berner
That being said, the funds I have been allocated to the 2020 Olympics will still be used only for the Olympics 2021. Here it is not wasted with a single krone! Especially not with the current Norwegian krone exchange rate.
I am optimistic, continue to fight and have the belief that we will all be strengthened by this!
